The murderer is easy to deduce, but having said that, I look forward to reading the next book in the series. One night after working at her dead-end job, Maureen goes out with a girlfriend and gets seriously drunk. And, to be honest, they were really dark books and I got really depressed writing them – I was garnethull glad they were finished.

My heart broke a bit at the end, as th Wow. Thus, I decided to dive in with the Garnethill trilogy. Despite some bumps and bruises, the overall plot was entertaining and engaging. I was doing a PhD and just stayed at home and wrote. In the 1 st book of the trilogy, GarnethillDnise comes home drunk after a night out with her best friend, falls into bed, and in the morning finds her lover dead in her living-room, his throat slit.

In the meantime, she garnetnill has to contend with the seriously flawed characters that constitute her family, some of whom doubt that she really was the victim of sexual abuse, and some of whom suspect that denisf may be guilty of the murder. Because of her father’s job as an Engineer, the family followed the north sea oil boom of the seventies around Europe She left school at sixteen and did a number of poorly paid jobs, including working in a meat factory, as a bar maid, kitchen porter and cook.


They were outsiders who were able to solve a crime before the police force.

The story had sturdy bones but it was not always well fleshed out. After a panic attack, Maureen calls the police, but it becomes painfully obvious to her that they think she’s the killer. I told a friend earlier that I was having a hard time articulating a review for this book because I liked it, but didn’t really like it.

The novel is another brilliant exploration of the themes of family, friendship and justice. Granted, Mauri is an unusual amateur sleuth, but what is it that makes her so?

For her, justice is a more complex issue related to the requirements of the crime genre: Leslie dunked a folded slice of buttered bread in the hot gravy in her bowl. Maureen’s actions at the end may seem a little over the top to some but I felt they fit in completely with her character.

I like to think of Maureen having a nice, quiet time in the Highlands, going off for coffee and making bread. It felt as if the book was missing some words and continually failed to complete sentences.

Her new novel, The Last Garethill, the third in the Meehan series, is set inwhen one of those garnetihll murderers is to be released from jail.


Will I read the other 2 in the trilogy – yes, but I’m going to take a break from them for now. I’m reading mostly garnthill electronic devices these days, but I bought the paperback versions. This friendly, funny mother-of-two is perched on the edge of a chair in the airy study of her spacious townhouse in the West End of Glasgow. Garnethill is available for download from Apple Books.

This is another re-visit for me. Mnia did not find the mixture of a real Glasgow and invented Glasgow entirely convincing but that is a small complaint about a worthwhile read.

Anyway the gzrnethill of this murderous and abusive story is exciting if not entirely surprising. What the hell happened here?

Maureen is a child abuse survivor and had spent time in a psychiatric hospital. Her protagonists are all female, most of them of the Irish minority in Glasgow, dehise, and heavy drinkers. Before doing so she goes out with her best friend, Leslie and gets drunk.
