Human-like, but not human, the nara ruled Tanyrin for centuries. The most feared among them were their naragi, sorcerers whose power was all but invincible. Not until the coming of Arami Lothlain, King of Tanyrin and Blessed of Loth, did the rein of the nara come to a bloody end. For four hundred years afterwards, the land was at peace. Stefn Eldering was the youngest son of the Earl of Shia, the last in a long, proud line of demon hunters.

He bwcca also a sin-catcher, living proof of God’s displeasure, the shame of his existence atonement for the sins of his ancestors. Michael Arranz was the son of a duke and one of the despised h’naran, half-bloods cursed with the blood of the nara running through their veins. Of all the h’nara, his family alone was immune from the persecution of the powerful Church of Loth, protected by an ancient covenant. In ordinary times, the paths of Michael and Stefn xethe never have crossed.

Alas, times were no longer ordinary.

The latest of the Lothlain kings was a weakling, unable to curb the ambitions of an increasingly powerful, corrupt clergy. Famine stalked the land. Fear of the h’nara, fanned by the Church, spread tentacles everywhere. Tanyrin teetered on the edge of chaos. A loyal and devoted friend to Tanyrin’s crown prince, Michael could refuse Severyn Lothlain nothing, not becac when Severyn asked the unspeakable of him. Determined to wrest the throne from his brother, Severyn intended nothing less than the resurrection of the ancient naragi.

Michael, whose naran blood was the purest in Tanyrin, was the logical choice. But for Michael become what mankind feared most, he needed a conduit through which to take the powerful, dangerous magic of the Dark Stream. He needed a man who carried the ancient blood of the cethera. Would you like to tell us about a lower price?

Cethe – Becca Abbott – Google Books

Having seen how Stefn’s brother was so much like the father Michael chose to forgo that evil brother in favour of Stefn. Stefn has been kept locked away for most of his life because ceths is deformed he has a 6th toe so I’m not sure how anyone could have been able to see that ‘deformity’.

I guess the fact that the put the poor bloke in ‘special’ shoes which, per description, might as well have been a massive neon sign over poor Stefn’s head flashing ‘FREAK’ made him stick out like a sore thumb.

Back to the story: Michael and his buddy, Prince Severyn, decided to take over Stefn’s family stronghold of Shia. Severyn also has Michael put a spell on Stefn so he’ll sign a document giving his consent, as the last surviving Earl of Shia, for Stefn’s sister to marry Severyn. The use of magic drains Michael severely and results in him spending days asleep. Taking Stefn as his Cethe and, basically, screwing his brains out allows Michael to recharge, as it were, so he doesn’t need to sleep off the effects of using magic.

The first time he ‘takes’ Stefn is, pretty much, a forced effort. He puts a spell over Stefn which enables him to have sex with him without his consent. Eventually and, really, it doesn’t take long when you think about it even after the initial forced sex scene Stefn grows to crave sex with Michael oh, those pesky lust laden spells but Stefn keeps getting kidnapped silly boy and Michael uses a substitute Cethe he’s obviously not fussy!

Michael starts to realize that Stefn really is giving him more of a ‘recharge’, though, so he realizes he needs him more than just any old Cethe. That’s when he realizes he’s actually in love with Stefn. Stefn is treated like a commodity and, frankly, the town whipping boy by a whole lot of people. I didn’t like how selfish Severyn is; he’s a spoiled brat, truth be told.

He wants Michael but he doesn’t ‘want’ Michael. Michael is totally committed to Severyn and would probably be his actual partner, in every sense, given half a chance, until he realizes that Stefn is the man for him. One person found this helpful. This is one of those books that I feel the need to make a few disclaimer-like statements before just diving into my review. There are elements in this story that will offend many and make not just a few uncomfortable.

I think it best if you can’t stomach certain hard elements that you do not choose to read this story. This is a very dark gritty fantasy with not a lot of light. Now all that being said, it would be doing this story an injustice to reducing it down to only what I just said. I marveled over the fantasy world that the author created.

I found this take on light and dark magic interesting the way it was blended with political and religious backdrop in an almost late medieval feel with the castles and knights, but maybe even Georgian with the talk of carriages, balls, clubs and cravat styles.

The plot was scintillating too with the political intrigue and the inter-personal relationship stuff going on with twists in the story providing nice surprises now and then. The only issue I had with the plot was that I felt it left some things open still that needed to be tied up unless there are plans for a sequel.

I guess that would be a reason to do that. And then of course the characters were a big part. I was really into the romance knowing that for it to work the two heroes would have a great deal to overcome. The young human, Stefn, is the unwanted greatly abused son and member of a family that perpetrated heinous crimes for greed and power. He is made to feel the vengeance of those most hurt by it like Michael who represents the Nara race.

Cethe by Becca Abbott | LibraryThing

Stefn abbotf been downtrodden all his life, but it was great seeing that his spirit was strong and no matter what- and its a lot- he remains unbroken and I was just cheering for him to get his turn at happiness in the end. The nara witch lord, Michael, has his chance to avenge and right personal wrongs and further the cause xethe himself and his friends to end the corruption in the church and the kingdom by taking and using Stefn.

At first, even though he has his reasons, Michael is harsh, abusive and wrong. He squelches his pity toward the one he is hurting and I felt he was a villain, but then he gains new thoughts and outlook as he is exposed to Stefn. Michael changes which allowed me to change how I felt about him. There is also the difficulty that the secret love that leads to jealousy of the Prince, Sev, causes to the two.

I received my copy of “Cethe”, yesterday First of the writing is superb! The characters are engaging, well rounded abbtt have depth to them. The story line isn’t original, but the characters, and the flow of the writing I’m not going to give away any spoilers. All I have to say is, that if you’re into “Yaoi” novels You can’t help but feel sorry for little Stefn Eldering, throughout the book, he is really put through some trials and tribulations.

He is brutally naive, when it comes to the Nara and the Church.

Although, young and naive I liked him, because he was willing to take in the truth and change his views towards the Church and the less fortunate H’nara slaves. I thought he would just be another pretty boy, who would whine throughout the book, but I was pleasantly surprised with his strength and character.

Michael Arranz didn’t strike me as the cliche seme. Ok, yes he is drop dead gorgeous, and use he is as smooth as silk, when it comes to his swag I loved that he was very forceful during the sex scenes, and that he was afraid to get down and dirty, in order to get what he needed, or wanted. I loved that he just wasn’t another handsome, muscled up, dude, with a stick and no brain.

Prince Severyn, is a good man but in my opinion he was cheated out of a longing love, that he had for Michael. He loved his country and people, but he also loved Michael and wanted to change Tanyrin, not just only for his people, but also so he could be with Michael in the end.
