I continue to be very impressed. The first is the ever phenomenal characterization of London as a charming, vibrant and multicultural city. I loved how supportive he is while at the same time avoiding the overt sentimentality or wallowing in guilt.

I Rated this a 5. Beyond an apparent plan to control an underground population of unfortunate wretches physically deformed by magic, aaronovitcg character’s desire lines remain obscure. Caught in a web of dirty money that stretches from the boardrooms of the United States to the death squads of El Aarronovitch, Andrew must decide whether to save himself – or find out who killed the man he loves, and destroyed the only home he’s ever known.
There was one recording blip, at the end of Chapter 12, when it suddenly spliced into an earlier section. I have to agree that, yes, Griffin has a lot over Aaronovitch, but Griffin is one of those authors who I rank in their own category, along with aaronovitcy like Steven Erikson, J.
The ending was not disappointing and there really was no cliffhanger; however, the storyline ended giving way to more novels in the series which there are many more.

Peter is an amusing fellow with a scientific turn of mind, always trying to unpick and understand how magic works. The humor raises smiles instead of outright laughs.
Peter Grant continues to be a fantastic character surrounded by a fantastic supporting cast. The plot as a whole was a bit okay. Terrific entertainment and ripe for a series.
Nightingale is dry and frequently funny, though not intentionally, and sad. The book is written with wit and intelligence without any unnecessary fluff. Aaronovitch got in his sleeve.

There is enough fresh ideas and situations to avoid it feeling like a regurgitation of the first novel too. If the solution to the mystery feels a little forced, or the villains feel a little flat, I am willing to let that slide because everything else is so enjoyable.
They’ve been two of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to and there’s no way I’d pick any of this series up in print now. I will certainly be moving on to the next book this time! Peter Grant is a great character and I cannot wait to read the follow-up later this year. In this installment, he is on the trail of that particularly incisive har har killer as well as a black ethically challenged magician and a ravenous jazz vampire. I’ve not been a fan of urban fantasy for very long, but over the years I have come to appreciate the particular brand of “fun and fluffiness” that’s so characteristic of books like this.

Because “screw ’em and slay ’em” appears as enough of a repeating trope in the genre to make me really worry about guys, sometimes. We get a lot of musical references here, a bit of jazz history and most importantly more great fun in the wonderfully set up universe.
