A team is not a bunch of people with job titles, but a congregation of individuals, each of whom has a role which is understood by other members. Research showed that the most successful teams were made up of a diverse mix of behaviours.

Dr Meredith Belbin and his team discovered that there are nine clusters of behaviour – these were called ‘Team Roles’.

Each team needs access to each of the nine Team Role behaviours to become a high performing team. However, this doesn’t mean that every team requires nine people! Most people will have two or three Team Roles blebin they are most comfortable with, and this can change over time. Each Team Role has its strengths and weaknesses, and each has equal importance.

However, not all are always required at the teamtollen time – it is important to first look at the team objectives, and work out which tasks need to be undertaken.

Once this has been done, discussions can take place regarding which and when each Team Role behaviour should be utilised.

None of this is possible without an individual completing a Belbin Self-Perception Inventory and asking for feedback from their colleagues. The Belbin Individual Report that is produced will help pin-point individual Team Role strengths and weaknesses to communicate and share with the rest of the team.

Explores opportunities and develops contacts. Might be over-optimistic, and can lose interest once the initial enthusiasm has passed. Helps the team to gel, using their versatility to identify the work required and complete it on behalf of the team. Co-operative, perceptive and diplomatic. Listens and averts friction. Can be indecisive in crunch situations and tends to avoid confrontation. Don’t be surprised to find that: They might be hesitant to make unpopular decisions.

Can be seen as manipulative and might offload their own share of the work. They might over-delegate, leaving themselves little work to do. Teeamrollen, imaginative, free-thinking, generates ideas and solves difficult problems. Might ignore incidentals, and may be too preoccupied to communicate effectively.

Provides a logical eye, making impartial judgements where required and weighs up the team’s options in a dispassionate way.

Sober, strategic and discerning. Sees all options and judges accurately. Sometimes lacks the drive and ability to inspire others and can be overly critical. Single-minded, self-starting and dedicated. They provide specialist knowledge and skills. Tends to contribute on a narrow front and can dwell on the technicalities. Provides the necessary drive to ensure that the team keeps moving and does not lose focus or momentum.

Challenging, dynamic, thrives on pressure. Has the drive and courage to overcome obstacles. Can be prone to provocation, and may sometimes offend people’s feelings. They could risk becoming aggressive and bad-humoured in their attempts to get things done. Turns ideas into actions and organises work that needs to be done. Can be a bit inflexible and slow to respond to new possibilities.

They might be slow to relinquish their plans in favour of positive changes. Most effectively used at the end of tasks to polish and scrutinise the work for errors, subjecting it to the highest standards of quality control.

Can be inclined to worry unduly, and reluctant to delegate. They could be accused of taking their perfectionism to extremes. How will two people work together?
